General Information

Determines the blood group (ABO) and Rh type (pos or neg) of prenatal/postpartum patients. The Blood group and Rh type of expectant mothers may indicate potential for hemolytic disease of the fetus/newborn. Rh typing is used to determine Rh immune globulin candidacy for prenatal and postpartum patients. For blood grouping and Rh typing for any other patient population, please reach out directly to a local blood bank.

Specimen Collection / Processing Instructions

The specimen should be tested as soon as possible after collection. If testing is delayed, specimens should be stored at 2 to 8°C.

Unacceptable Specimen Conditions

Grossly hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic samples. Frozen samples. Bacterial contamination. Samples from patients other than prenatal.

Limitations

Variable testing results may be observed with partial antigens, which are rare variants of the D antigen. Very weak expressions of the D antigen may not be detected.
