Specimen Collection / Processing Instructions

PREFERRED: SST - Must be centrifuged within 45 minutes of collection. PTH ALTERNATE: EDTA-centrifuge and aliquote within 45 minutes of collection- if EDTA is UNSPUN must be transported at room temperature and received within 24 hours of collection. CA ALTERNATE: Green Top Tube - centrifuge and aliquot within 45 minutes of collection

Stability

PTH: Serum: 2 days at 2‑8 °C or 6 months at -20 °C
Plasma: 2 days at 15‑25 °C, 3 days at 2‑8 °C,  or 6 months at -20 °C
Unspun EDTA: 24 hours at 15‑25 °C
CA: 7 days at 15-25 ˚C or 3 weeks at 2-8 ˚C

Unacceptable Specimen Conditions

PTH: Red top tubes, serum tubes without serum separators, unspun EDTA >24 hours after collection, unspun EDTA shipped refrigerated. CA: Gross hemolysis, EDTA, oxalate, or citrate anticoagulant
